Conference «Arts, Leisure and Tourism: dialogues of disquietude»

17th and 18th December 2021
University of Aveiro

Online Event

The artwork enhances disquietude. The contemplation of a painting, a sculpture, a plastic installation; the experience of a musical concert, a body performance, a theatrical game; the aesthetic and communicative enjoyment of words or images creates disquietude, awakens sensations and emotions. We aim to react and challenge this disquietude, in an attempt to solve this our inner turmoil.

In that moment is when we decide to travel, to start a quest for an imaginary space, made up with a heritage of images, representations and experiences. But what we will actually find is a hybrid entity, made of two dimensions: the material and the non-material (Michel Lussault, 2007). The arts, as they enhance imagination, trigger the desire to discover these transforming spaces, to know in loco the material dimension of these places.

In this constant dialogue between the material and the non-material, between the real and the imaginary, Mankind adds cultural content to its life. This leisure experience, by carrying within it the ideal of humanistic leisure (Cuenca Cabeza, 2000), creates knowledge, autonomy, freedom and acts on the balance of Mankind’s own life. Through creativity, it can strengthen its critical spirit. However, it is due to the experience with the Other where Mankind strengthens its values and virtues.

At present, in the brave new world we find ourselves, the real, imaginary and imaginable places took another turn and, transformed by digital “technomagic”, are now just a type away, transforming us into e-tourists immersed into interactive networks, geolocations, augmented realities, landscapes and in 3D oasis. From real museums, we head into to virtual museums, where the arts intersect, leisure is transformed and disquietude becomes increasingly expanded and interactive.

This being true, if the work of art is characterized by the disquietude it causes, what to do at present, when this ends up generating disagreements, uncontrollability, unbridled runaways instead of an experiential and profound meeting with Art, with ourselves and with the others, the journey becomes a transient invasion which destroys the Self-Identity.

We invite all those who investigate the arts, leisure and tourism to, from an interdisciplinary perspective, join together for two days of reflection and discussion around this issue, according to the following topics:

  1. Travel and imaginary spaces
  2. Arts and tourism: leisure or disquietude?
  3. Arts, leisure and e-tourism
  4. Paths to sustainability: challenges
